High up in the mountains of northern Sweden lies Stekenjokk Mine, an environment where both people and technology are pushed to their absolute limits. This remote and exposed site experiences some of the harshest conditions found anywhere in the Nordic region, making reliable environmental monitoring a true engineering challenge.
A Site Defined by Extreme Weather
The Stekenjokk area is known for its dramatic climate, where conditions can shift rapidly and unpredictably. Throughout the year, the mine is exposed to:
- Strong, persistent winds
- Heavy snow cover for more than half the year
- Driving rain and sudden temperature variations
- Long periods of sub-zero temperatures and ice buildup
In such an environment, every component must be engineered for durability, stability and uninterrupted operation.
A Monitoring Solution Built for Harsh Environments
To ensure continuous environmental data collection despite the extreme weather, we installed a rugged, reinforced solution designed specifically for long-term deployment in challenging conditions.
Key components of the setup:
- Stainless-steel protective enclosure with padlock, shielding the YDOC 417 datalogger from wind, snow, ice and moisture
- Sensor integration via Modbus, collecting reliable measurements from Keller and MJK instrumentation
- LTE-M connectivity with MQTT, enabling secure data transfer even during winter storms and low-signal periods
- Real-time data delivery directly to the Sensor Online IoT platform for visualization, analysis and reporting
This configuration guarantees high uptime, secure communication and dependable data – even when temperatures plummet and storms roll in.
