Where Technology Meets the Arctic
Stekenjokk Mine sits high in the mountains of northern Sweden, exposed to temperatures below −40°C, heavy snowfall, and limited connectivity. Environmental monitoring here is not an option – it is a regulatory requirement. Sensor-Online provides the backbone for continuous, automated monitoring that would be impossible with manual rounds.
What Is Monitored
- Air quality – dust particles, NO₂ and CO levels near active areas
- Water quality in drainage runoff – pH, turbidity, conductivity
- Groundwater levels in monitoring wells around the site
- Weather conditions – temperature, wind, precipitation for operational decisions
Technology in Harsh Environments
LoRaWAN sensors rated to −40°C with IP68 enclosures were selected for outdoor installations. NB-IoT provided cellular backup where LoRaWAN gateway coverage was marginal. Sensor-Online ran on-premises to eliminate dependence on external connectivity. Browse ruggedized sensors or read about industrial IoT.
